SURFACE 1°22 X PERTH 31°9 WORKSHOP

Don’t think.
Thinking is the enemy of creativity.
It’s self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy.
You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.

Ray Bradbury

Spring has sprung down under. It felt like summer had arrived while we were working in the screen print studio on day two of  SURFACE 1°22's Textile Design for Screen and Digital Print workshop. A frenzy of art making moved into screen printing as participants observed their black and white motifs transformed through ink, colour and cloth.

We were a mixed bunch, and our backgrounds varied as we giggled together in Curtin University's FashionHUB. Using the principles of repetition and scale, motifs were overlaid and overprinted to achieve mufti-dimensional and multi-coloured textile designs. I had Ray Bradbury's mantra in my head, insisting that we trust and test, experiment until we reached creative flow....

Later that evening I left three studious and completely absorbed students in the print room, smiling as the sun went down that they had caught the surface design bug.

A big thank you to Anne Farren, Joanna Quake and Cordelia Gibbs for hosting SURFACE 1°22 at Curtin University's wonderful studios. And a warm, heartfelt thanks to all participants who made the 2 days such a pleasure to run. I know many of you are reworking and continuing to explore your artwork - looking forward to seeing more outcomes!
