Paper Pattern Print is an ongoing SURFACE 1°22 project that aims
to present illustrative
motifs and repeat patterns applied onto various
surfaces to celebrate hand-craftsmanship
and traditional art making
methods.
The Paper Pattern Print project
began back in 2011 and was presented as an exhibition of surface design
wallpapers from Fashion Textiles students. I wrote that I could see as a resurgence of
interest in the applied arts, a renewed appreciation of hand-drawn images and
handmade objects.
The project responds to a growing
global interest in surface design and a trend in the multidisciplinary practices of art and design. Pascal
Johanssen, gallery owner and curator of international illustration festival, Illustrative, believed the renewed interest in pattern
design, ornamentation and surface design was reflexive of living in a new
millennium; “…it is about new visual routines and an aesthetic phenomena, which
are neither design nor fine art in the conventional sense.”

SURFACE 1°22 has developed a
series of pattern design workshops under the banner of Paper Pattern Print; an
introduction to what surface design is and could be. Workshop participants design
square-shaped motifs on paper and use pencils, markers, chalk or paints to
colour by hand. These basic units are then copied and repeated to create
all-over patterns that can be applied manually or digitally, onto a variety of
surfaces and spaces. The scope for the project is HUGE!
We are looking for hosts and
collaborators.
