Designing Motifs for Digital Textiles

Designing a motif is the starting point for surface and textile design. The beauty of digitally printed cloth is that the artwork can be produced in full colour and by hand. This ensures exclusivity and originality, customizing a design move beyond commercial manufacturing and restrictions.

Digital design can start the same way as designing for screen printed textiles, and motifs can be modified from black and white basic units, coloured digitally, or by hand.

Colours can be tonal and radiate, with watercolour bleeds, paints splatters or brushstrokes. Each motif can be slightly different and in it's imperfection, retain the integrity of art making by hand. Imagery can overlay, change in scale and proportion. Filters can change the visual texture, add depth and shadows to glossy one-dimensional ideas.
